The Range is Now Open every evening from M-F

Saturday August 7th at 10:00am we will work on the range to improve airflow, improve sound dampening, and improve safety. The more that show up the better, so please e-mail if you can help.

Welcome to the Douglas County Rifle/Pistol Club Range Information Page.

Generally, the range is open M-F evenings with shooting starting at 7PM and ending at 8:45PM. The City staff need shooters out of the basement by 9PM.

Due to safety considerations, persons wishing to use the facility MUST attend a brief orientation session. This is given at the range on FRIDAY evenings, beginning promptly at 6:00PM. If you are not seated in the room with your paperwork completed by that time, you will not be able to go through orientation that evening and will have to come another time. It is recommended you be present no later than 5:50PM, in the room, for orientation. If no one else comes to shoot, the range officer may accommodate late arrivals by repeating the orientation when he has finished with people who came on time. But usually, orientation is given just once on Friday evening, since to do otherwise is unfair to those who came on time not to mention unfair to the range officer.

Since enactment of a new Lawrence ordinance (City Code section 14-408-- March 2006) governing possession of firearms within 200ft of a bar (which effectively translates to just about all of downtown Lawrence), users of the Range should be aware that firearms carried into the Community Building must be unloaded; magazines of semi-auto firearms should be empty, as a loaded magazine in proximity to the firearm for which it is designed may be considered a loaded weapon.

You will need to bring your own hearing and eye protection. And ear protection definitely does not mean like this, though we do not know if the person truly is ATF or if they just bought a hat! We do not rent firearms, nor do we provide ammunition.

You should download, print out, read, and sign ALL OF the following three items to bring with you to orientation:
Information/Application-for-membership form
Range Safety Rules
Willful Participation Agreement

Signed copies will be collected by the Range Officer and retained by the Club following orientation. You should print an additional copy of the Safety Rules for your reference while in the facility.

No person who has failed to complete these forms and turn them in to the Range Officer at orientation may use the facility.

Of Particular Relevance to Kansas CCH Licensees

The range is within a City of Lawrence facility. Thus, as a municipal building you may not enter the building with your weapon concealed on your person. Carry-in rules are therefore the same as in paragraph-2 above.

While on the range premises, you may NOT carry your weapon holstered on your person. This is a general-use facility, and therefore must be operated differently from a law-enforcement or other specialized range. The Orientation Session will provide detailed review of DCRPC range safety rules.

Additionally, when on the firing line you may NOT practice drawing your weapon from a holster. This applies even if your weapon is unloaded; to do otherwise makes it impractical for the Range Officer to assure full safety of the range for all users.

The elevator is controlled by City personnel and access to the basement level sometimes is restricted. If you press "B" and the elevator does NOT go to the basement, use it to get to the upper level and inform the building personnel at the desk in the lobby that you need to go to the basement.
Is there a phone in the range?
No.
Does the range offer a Hunter Safety class?
No. As an aside, a 2006 New York Times article offers an interesting perspective on why people hunt.
